UGLY START, BEAUTIFUL FINISH
It took a little more confidence and a whole lot more resiliency as the Aeros won their second straight 9-3 Sunday afternoon to finish a four game series with the Bowie Baysox.
Starter Connor Graham got some run support early as the Aeros posted three runs in the top of the 3rd as Beau Mills scored John Drennen and Nick Weglarz with a stand-up double. Josh Rodriguez, who had the start at shortstop, had a sacrifice fly to top off the inning.
Graham came out with more confidence than in his first few outings. It was just the infield that was shaky. Danny Figeroa reached, and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error by Rodriguez. It was then Brandon Waring, who has torched Akron pitching so far this season, scoring Figeroa with a stand-up double, cutting the Akron lead to two.
Akron extended the lead back to three with a sacrifice fly by Matt McBride. Then in the top of the 3rd as Weglarz hit his second single, scoring Alex Castillo in the process making it a 5-1 Akron lead.
Graham worked well up to the 3rd, even with the Akron defense committing three errors around him. That was until Brandon Waring sent another home-run sailing into the trees in left field, cutting the Aeros lead back to 5-3.
Josh Rodriguez led off the top of the 5th with a solo home-run himself, and Nick Weglarz followed suit with a sacrifice fly to push the Akron lead to 7-3.
Both teams stayed scoreless until the top of the 9th when Weglarz again sacrificed for a run, bringing home Josh Rodriguez. Matt McBride capped off the scoring with an RBI single to bring home John Drennen. Brian Grenning got the Baysox out in the bottom of the 9th to win the game 9-3.
While the Aeros did leave 24 runners on base, there plenty of positives to take from the series finale. Connor Graham picked up his first win of the season, and John Drennen went 4 for 6 hitting from the lead-off spot.
